Course Description
A half day session covering the types, risks and legislation connected with working in confined spaces.
Recommend Attendance
Any staff who from time to time may be called upon to enter / work in confined spaces of any sort. Any person overseeing a confined space contract acting as Supervisor / Responsible person.
Aim
To make staff aware of the many types and forms of confined spaces, the risks & dangers associated therewith; the actions and precautions to before entering a space; the types and use of equipment associated with confined spaces.
Learning Objectives
Having completed the course the delegates will be able to:
- Understand the requirements of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
- Identify what is and what is not a confined space and if the confined space Regulations 1997 and associated ACOP should apply
- Discuss the various dangers likely to arise within that space (including health hazards)
- Carry out a full and accurate risk assessment with regard to the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Instigate a safe system of work if entry into the space cannot be avoided
- Awareness of safety equipment
- Instigate and operate effective communications systems
- Assess and consider the need for emergency/rescue equipment and procedures
- Complete a Permit to Work

Method
The learning objectives will be achieved by theoretical and practical input supported by a powerpoint presentation, delegates' notes, and operational equipment.
Assessment
An assessment will be set to ensure a satisfactory level of competence has been achieved. An multi choice exam will be undertaken. A certificate will be awarded to those delegates who complete the course and reach a satisfactory standard.
